My CSS Reboot Hot List ‘06

CSS Reboot Hot List

Some of the designs my fellow rebooters over at the May 1st CSS Reboot have thrown down absolutely blow me away. From the obligatory Avalonstar and the super-slick Jeff Croft to the break-out designs of some lesser known designers, I’ve been really impressed and inspired by everyone’s work. I’ve compiled a short list of my favorites to ogle over.

Note: These picks are obviously only my personal preferences, and given the sheer amount of amazing work over at the reboot, I could easily have compiled a big list of 100 kick ass sites that would all be worthy of showcase any day of the year, but I’m lazy so I only included ten.

Now then, lets get right down to business shall we?

Prabhath’s work steals the show for me. He really executed well on a fantastic color scheme and the result is a really beautiful site.

This is one hell of a color scheme to pull off, but somehow he managed to do it. Also, I dig the clean lines and simplicity of the whole site.

What can I say, I’m a green-a-holic.

One of the most polished sites in the reboot, very simple, very sweet.

This is the design everyone’s been buzzing about, even before the reboot started! The CMS he built rocks the house and allows him to integrate third party content like del.icio.us links and allow comments that remain on his site.

I loved the site before the reboot, and he’s managed to make it even better with this design while retaining the same feel the old site had.

A fantastic lightweight design that makes great use of contrast and gradients rather than relying on splashy colors. Too bad I can’t understand a word.

I’ve always been a sucker for plants in design.

Niggle

I love everything about this design, from the type treatments and different stylings for pull quotes, stickies, etc, to the color scheme.

Avalonstar
Bryan Veloso
Avalonstar

This new juggernaut of blogging shows he’s still got it. Clean lines, quirky taglines, and anime category images keep me coming back for more.

Maybe Google Translate could help you understanding french, but it’s not quite accurate:

Thanks for picking me, by the way :)

Haha, I don’t know if I’d call myself a powerhouse. But I appreciate that I’ve been featured on a site that was actually one of my reboot favorites. :) Thanks a lot Rob, and hopefully I’ll keep you coming back (with or without the Azumanga images).

[…] Phu Ly’s Many colours of a reboot, Natalie Jost’s My Favorite Reboots for Spring 2006, Rob Goodlatte’s My CSS Reboot Hot List and Chris Garrett’s The Post Reboot Deconstruction. […]

    Very nice list! :)

One thing that bugs me about many of those is the very low contrast of the comments section. Jeff Croft, Matt Brett (I still think he does too much Photoshop and not enough design, don’t like), and Niggle—all of them have barely readable comments.

[…] In other news, I’m enjoying the attention of some really talented designers, who have done a stellar job with their own sites for the reboot. […]

Thanks for including me, Rob. This design of your is definitely one of my top few from the Reboot this year. I freaking LOVE your background image — the color and Rothko-esque texture gets me all excited. :)

  7. Lots of great sites this year. Think I’ll do a May 10. reboot for myself, or something like that. :)

By the way, great header and sIFR headings you’ve got here. Top notch!

    Hi Rob,
I’m honored to make your Hot List. By the way… I’m a green-a-holic too (obviously).

  9. Your site is fucking gorgeous, however you in the comments section you have a margin-bottom set to like 5px on users names, however no margin-top and it doesn’t look ‘neat’. But yeah, your site is beautiful, I love the color scheme selection, it’s calm and from where I am sitting it compares well with the view outside.

  10. Andy Pearson May 4th at 3:43 pm

wow, thanks for adding me to your list! I never ever thought that my site would appear with the likes Matt Brett and Bryan Veloso!

And by the way man, the site you have here is awesome, good job on the reboot!

  11. Cypress, thanks for the heads up. Theres still a bunch of problems in IE. I fixed a few of them this afternoon using some hacks, including the problem with the comment boxes. Let me know if you’re still seeing weirdness.

One really annoying bug I’ve been working on trying to fix is this 1 pixel shift in the backgrounds on Safari. Because I have to layer multiple backgrounds on top of each other, they have to line up or else they look like crap. The background images are all the same width, but for some reason the middle background image is not cooperating in Safari. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them. I looked around to see if there were any Safari filters I could hack in, but I don’t believe there are any.
